2017-2018 Engineering/Computer Science/Finance Cohort

Our cohort members will utilize a variety of pedagogical strategies in their course redesign including flipped classrooms, hybrid courses, virtual labs, online assignments, and team-based learning. Most members will develop video tutorials as part of their course redesign.

Engineering/Computer Science/Finance Redesign Cohort Lead, Paul Nissenson, Ph.D.

paulAbout the Lead: Paul has been a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona since 2011. He teaches courses in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and numerical methods. Paul’s current research interests include studying the impact of technology in engineering education and viscosity measurement. He believes that recent advances in technology have made it possible to completely rethink the in-class experience and loves experimenting with technologies and related pedagogies in the classroom.

Redesign Strategy: A flipped classroom approach was used to introduce active learning exercises in class with multiple opportunities for assessment. The McGraw-Hill Connect platform was used to increase engagement with the textbook.

Redesign Outcomes: The flipped format has allowed a more engaging environment with increased interaction among students.
