Academic Integrity & Online-Blended Learning

With the movement to further utilization of online course delivery and engagement, higher education is at a pivotal crossroad. We must find ways to effectively utilize technology while maintaining the quality of the educational experience and desired outcomes. In addition, when offering or requiring online assignments and other assessments, there is the concern whether we truly know which student is completing the assessment. We must  be familiar with related research, know how to organize our courses, develop our assessments, and implement some of the following technological measures to minimize cheating.

SafeAssign is a plagiarism tool, helping students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase. SafeAssign is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool. SafeAssign compares submitted assignments against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works. SafeAssign is based on a unique text matching algorithm capable of detecting exact and inexact matching between a paper and source material. SafeAssignments are compared against several different databases, including: Internet, ProQuest ABI/Inform database, Institutional document archives, and Global Reference Database. SafeAssign is now part of the Blackboard suite of products. All 11 campuses that are part of the system-wide Blackboard contract have access to SafeAssign, albeit in a limited version.

Reduces plagiarism by checking student work instantly for potential plagiarism using pattern recognition algorithms. An Originality Report is generated in a matter of seconds. It is accessible through the LMS platform or independently by participating campuses. It also has a convenient grading feature for submitted papers. We have a system-wide agreement with TurnitIn with all but one campus participating.
