SQUAIR: Summary of Student Feedback

From Fall 2016 through Fall 2018, students enrolled in online-blended courses taught by instructors completing at least one CSU QA professional development course were sent a Student Feedack Survey as one method to learn the impact on QA PD toward greater teaching-learning success. The survey derives from the 24 Core Elements of the CSU Quality Learning and Teaching instrument and is inclusive of the 23 Essential Elements of the Quality Matters Rubric. Near the end of each course, students were asked to rate course quality across the following categories:

  1. Course Overview and Introduction (4 survey items)
  2. Assessment and Evaluation of Student Learning (5 items)
  3. Instructional Materials and Resources (4 items)
  4. Student Interaction and Community (3 items)
  5. Facilitation and Instruction (2 items)
  6. Technology for Teaching and Learning (2 items)
  7. Learner Support and Resources (2 items)
  8. Accessibility and Universal Design (3 items)

Summary of Student Feedback Data

Student responses were grouped according to what degree of CSU QA training their instructor had achieved: one CSU QA training; two trainings; three-or-more trainings; or the gold standard of having their course formally reviewed and certified by credentialed peer-reviewers. Using the Chi Square statistic determined if there are significant differences in student ratings according to amount of QA professional development or course certification.

1 versus 2 QA trainings completed*
Chi Square value (χ2 = 141.056, df =1, p<0.0001) indicating there were significantly more ‘Excellent’ answers provided by participants when the instructor had two trainings as compared to an instructor with one training.

2 versus 3 trainings completed
Chi Square value (χ2 = 3.578, df =1, p<0.0586) indicates there was a slightly larger proportion of ‘Excellent’ answers by participants with an instructor who had three trainings as compared to two trainings.

3 trainings versus Certified Course
Chi Square value (χ2 = 3.425, df =1, p<0.0642) indicates there was a slightly larger proportion of ‘Excellent’ answers when the instructor course was certified as compared to instructors with three trainings and no course certification.

3 versus 1 QA trainings completed**
Chi Square value (χ2 = 153.524, df =1, p<0.0001) indicated there were significantly more ‘Excellent’ answers provided by participants when the instructor had three trainings as compared to an instructor with one training.

Course Certification versus 1 QA training completed***
Chi Square value (χ2 = 247.538, df =1, p<0.0001) indicated there were significantly more ‘Excellent’ answers provided by participants when the instructor had attained course certification as compared to an instructor with one training.
