Academic Integrity Tools

This category of products relates to tools that look to maintain the integrity of the academic process by attempting to reduce plagiarism and cheating. These tools are used in face to face, hybrid and online courses.

SafeAssign is a plagiarism tool, helping students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase. SafeAssign is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool. SafeAssign compares submitted assignments against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works. SafeAssign is based on a unique text matching algorithm capable of detecting exact and inexact matching between a paper and source material. SafeAssignments are compared against several different databases, including: Internet, ProQuest ABI/Inform database, Institutional document archives, and Global Reference Database. SafeAssign is now part of the Blackboard suite of products.  All 11 campuses that are part of the system-wide Blackboard contract have access to SafeAssign, albeit in a limited version.

Reduces plagiarism by checking student work instantly for potential plagiarism using pattern recognition algorithms. An Originality Report is generated in a matter of seconds. It is accessible through the LMS platform or independently by participating campuses. It also has a convenient grading feature for submitted papers.

We have a system-wide agreement with TurnitIn with all but one campus participating.  As part of the contract monthly meetings are held with TurnitIn support to review the tickets submitted by CSU campuses, with an emphasis on  current opened tickets.  Another strategic initiative the CSU conducts with TurnitIn is  working to help TurnitIn improve the accessibility of its product. Monthly meetings are held to discuss  process and steps taken by TurnitIn to improve its VPATS and its accessibility roadmap.  For more information on these support and accessibility meetings, or to suggest topics for discussion, contact JP Bayard by email at See a list of CSU campuses using TurnitIn.

Exam Proctoring Solutions

Following a systemwide academic integrity RFP process, a Master Enabling Agreement was developed between the CSU and ProctorU, Proctorio, and Respondus in order to provide CSU campuses with options for purchasing services and products that may promote the academic integrity of courses and programs.
